    Bio

Anna-Rose Mathieson co-leads the California Appellate Law Group, which she joined after nearly ten years with the major national law firms of O’Melveny & Myers and Williams & Connolly. In 2017 the Daily Journal selected Anna-Rose as one of the Top 40 attorneys under 40 in the state of California, and she was named a Northern California Super Lawyer for appellate practice. She graduated first in her class from University of Michigan Law School and served as a law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court of the United States. Her broad range of experience helps Anna-Rose handle appeals on virtually any legal issue, including such varied topics as employment law, jurisdiction, antitrust, products liability, and constitutional law. She understands cutting-edge technology issues, having litigated significant copyright and trademark appeals. She has worked on criminal cases in both state and federal courts, and taught criminal law at the University of Michigan Law School. And she knows how to obtain review at the highest level, having authored U.S. Supreme Court merits briefs and petitions for certiorari on a wide range of issues. In addition to traditional appeals, Anna-Rose uses her appellate skills to help clients facing significant issues in trial litigation, working with trial counsel to brief critical motions, advise on jury instructions, and preserve and protect arguments for appeal. She also helps secure interlocutory appeals in federal court and works closely with the firm’s writ specialists on California writ petitions. Anna-Rose attended University of Michigan Law School as a Darrow scholar and graduated summa cum laude. She won more than a dozen awards in law school, including the school’s highest honor (the Bates Scholarship), and served as Articles Editor and Symposium Coordinator for the Michigan Law Review. After law school she clerked for Chief Judge Michael Boudin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and then for Justice Ginsburg. Anna-Rose serves as the co-Editor-in-Chief of the ABA’s Appellate Practice Journal, on the Executive Committee of the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Appellate Section, and on the Amicus Committee of California Women Lawyers. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Family Violence Appellate Project, and previously served as Co-President of FVAP’s New Leadership Council. She appears on radio, television, panels, and podcasts to discuss breaking issues of appellate and constitutional law, and writes articles for The Recorder, Daily Journal, California Litigation Review, and other legal publications. Anna-Rose’s cases include work for clients as broad-ranging as: • a nationwide chain of grocery stores in a Ninth Circuit trademark appeal • a tech CEO in a high-stakes divorce appeal • a variety of major companies in California products liability appeals • a law firm in a writ petition challenging a district court sanctions order • an individual homeowner in a Ninth Circuit appeal of an order forcing sale of a home • a public utilities company in Ninth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court ERISA litigation • an airline in labor relations and antitrust litigation • an entertainment studio in Ninth Circuit copyright appeals • a survivor of domestic violence in a California pro bono appeal • a computer parts manufacturer in a California antitrust appeal • an inmate deprived of property without due process, as court-appointed appellate counsel • a former president of foreign country in a federal Alien Tort Statute appeal Anna-Rose also has a robust amicus practice, and two of her recent U.S. Supreme Court amicus briefs received substantial news coverage.
